Flatter
Overview
Flatter is an elegant responsive child theme for Clipper and part of our “flat design” series themes that include FlatPress for ClassiPress, FlatPage for Vantage and FlatRoller for JobRoller. With minimal graphics the pages load much quicker which is just great for any website.
The look of coupon listing and single pages has been revamped to give them an ultra-modern feel. The homepage features options to enable grid view, tabbed view (choose categories or stores to display in the tabs), and full-width. The child theme comes with 11 colour schemes(!) and with dual navigation option that can be used to better manage your website. Not only that, there are practically just a couple of background images in the whole theme, which means and upgrade in look is firmly coupled with an upgrade in performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this child theme responsive?
Yes the theme is fully responsive - What is unique in this child theme?
We have completely refreshed the look from the default Clipper layout. The Flatter child theme layout is based on Flat Design, which practically means there are very few images used in the design, improving the performance on all devices. With the use of mobile phones for browsing websites ever increasing, the real icing on the cake comes in the form of the option to prevent each widget from displaying on mobile devices (not hiding it using CSS), which will keep the pages tidy and improve performance further - Do you plan to create more child themes along the same lines?
Yes, we subsequently launched FlatPress for ClassiPress, FlatPage for Vantage, and FlatRoller for JobRoller, so the customers can have consistent branding if they use more than one theme from AppThemes - How do I show more then 10 coupons on the homepage?
Open Settings → Reading page in your WP admin back end, and you can change the “Blog pages show at most” setting from 10 to another number, and that should reflect on your site. - How do I show grid view on the stores page?
Open taxonomy-stores.php file in wp-content/themes/flatter/ folder and find replace all instances of the following code:
<div class="box-holder">
with:
<div class="box-holder grid">
- How do I update the theme manually?
To update, you should extract the Zip file locally and overwrite the contents in the/wp-contents/themes/flatter/
folder. I always rename the new version folder fromflatter
toflatter-new
on my computer and once it’s uploaded on the server, just quickly rename the older version fromflatter
toflatter-old
and the new one fromflatter-new
back toflatter
. This way the switching takes the minimum amount of time and also you can roll back to the older version just in case the new one doesn’t work out.
Installation
- Extract zip in the /wp-content/themes/ directory.
- Activate the theme through the ‘Appearance’ menu in WordPress.
- Go to Flatter Settings → General to setup overall site options.
- Go to appearance => widgets => customize flatter home page widgets
Support Policy
From February 2015, support will only be available via email from our email address support @ themebound ( remove spaces).
Before you email us, please make sure you have browsed/searched through product forum for the answer to your question, and have read through the Support FAQs below:
Support FAQs
- What kind of support is offered with a purchased product?
Your product purchase includes one year of access to premium support via email and one year or free updates. Beyond that, you will need to renew your subscription year on year for around 30% of the product price. Support covers issues such as bug fixes (if any) under normal operation, how to use basic product features, very basic WordPress help, and help with very basic theme customisaton. If you need more advanced modifications please consider hiring a developer to do it for you. - Will you provide help with small modifications?
If you need to do small modifications, you may get help from us as long as they are reasonable in number and nature. If you have a lot of such modifications, please consider paid developer help. - What kind of help would be unreasonable to ask?
This is not an easy question to answer. We are here to ensure that the product you purchased works as intended by us and serves its purpose on your website. That means if it doesn’t work for you, we can step in and help you with it. However, it is when there are no issues with the functioning of the product and all you want is help with modification, that demands start getting unreasonable.
As mentioned before, we don’t mind helping with modifications, but we also expect you to have tried everything to do it yourself. In other words, we expect you to have tried all the settings in your theme, ensured that the issue relates to the product in question, searched through legacy product support forum, and looked around on Google for the answer to your questions before approaching us. Please bear in mind that one theme, one child theme and a few plugins can get you only so far, and you will probably need to make changes to the code of your website to add functionality, change design and personalise it. In case of too many modifications, we will politely ask you to seek paid help. - I am using one of your child themes. I am having an issue with it.
Please make sure the issue is really with the child theme by activating the parent theme and checking if the problem gets solved. Also please make sure you have tested all the settings in parent theme and child theme, sometimes the answer is right in there! Send us an email if the issue still persists. - I am using one of your child themes. I need help with customisation.
As a pre-requisite, you are going to need a basic understanding of HTML & CSS to start customising the layout and style of your theme. To dig deeper PHP knowledge, specifically to WordPress, will help as well. The WordPress Codex is a great place to start learning. For CSS changes related to text colour, background colour, fonts, etc, please consider using the Firebug extension. A simple Google search returns many good text/video tutorials. - Do you offer paid WordPress development services?
Yes we do depending on our work schedule. You can always run your requirements by us via email.

24 reviews of “Flatter”
There Has Been a Critical Error on Flatter theme. I contacted but didn’t get any help from the developer. I’m really disappointed.
I purchased the Flatter Pro and Flatter Premium and I had an issue with the demo import.
I sent an email almost 30 days and no reply from the support team. Huge disappointment!
Coupon popup is not working on my website. I have mailed to the author with some more doubts. I did not receive the reply on time i can’t understand what got after paid theme.
how and what is the use of buying a premium theme?
The theme is looking good.
Coupon popup is not working on my website. I have mailed to the author with some more doubts. I did not receive the reply even after five days.
Then what is the use of buying a premium theme?
I was hesitant at first to buy any of the Child Themes here because ServerPilot is exclusively using WordPress 4.8 at the moment and the last update to this theme was not as recent as I had hoped. I am running a Linode 4GB cloud server with ServerPilot and 6 Clipper WordPress sites. The key is to use the PHP 7.0 option in ServerPilot (instead of the 7.1). And everything will work out of the box without any errors.
Well, this theme had no issues with WP 4.8 that I have seen. Everything is working great and I have no complaints at all. The only thing I struggled with was incorporating Google Tag Manager. I never asked for help, so I cannot complain. Actually, that’s more of a Clipper-specific thing, so it has nothing to do with this theme. This theme is perfect and working great!
I am still working on the design for my website. Once I have it up and running I’ll update it.
First – you need Clipper Theme for this to work. I’ve read a few reviews out there that it didn’t work. You will need to pay for Clipper then purchase the Flatter Child Theme.
Out of the box it works great. I did go into the “editor” and removed the “powered by” and “another wordpress” and modified the footer so it just shows the (c) year and my website name. I also removed the rss, facebook, twitter in the header since I have another plugin that I am using to give it a cleaner look.
Color options are good. The only thing I would ask for from the developers is to be able to change just the “Header” and/or the Header Menu Navigation Bar background colors. It would also be great to be ale to fill in the space next to my logo with a “banner ad”. The “header” and “navigation menu” color options is the only reason I am giving 4 star rating. Once the additional color options are added (need to include white/plain color) 5 star.
Flatter theme is the best child theme for coupon sites,
I am using it for the past 2 month,
I don’t no any coding, I flowed their instruction and activated
the theme in to my word press,
But it will helpful for newbies if you create and provide video about
how to upload and active the Flatter theme
This is exactly what I was looking. Two advises – need to add more comments on codes and more customization options in theme colors (every single part, that is involve with color, can be added separately to .css file).
As a customer of Flatter and an experienced coupon marketer who works with hundreds of coupon sites both in the US and in Canada, I can easily say that Flatter has the best design that provides a better UI and UX. I was able to enchance the theme with CouponJoy plugin and Coupon Filter, which can also be found on this marketplace. Additionally, the tabbed homepage design makes it easy for you to monetise your website.
A+++++
The theme is great but support seems poor. I´ve been waiting almost a week for a solution to add more or edit the current social icons on the coupon sharing function.
is anyone else getting this problem? I am using the linkshare importer plugin and it uploadeds 1and.com coupons to the myhosting.com domain coupons. I have to manually go in and make corrections.
Also how many domains can i use this theme on does anyone know? I dont want to pay 29.99 to find out
It is a really good theme. But it needs some extra functions.
It’s good but need some modification to optimize Google pagespeed insight. So much CSS and Javascript is above the fold.
Nice looking theme , but the coupon pop-up dont work and still no help to solve this
This theme seems to add the finishing touches to Clipper. I’m happy with the results. Though I haven’t needed to contact the author for support, reading through the forums makes me comfortable that he responds pretty quickly to anything that arises. Two thumbs up.
This added some much needed life (IMO) to clipper. It changed a lot without changing everything, if that makes any sense. I am very happy. Best money I have spent on an add-on this far. Thank you!
Nice Theme. I got the theme which I was searching for it.
I bought this theme few days back and it’s really good… coupons look better with flatter, featured stores another great display. Most important I bought this theme for forced open affiliate link feature. If your coupon theme is not using it then you are loosing more then 50% of your revenue.
I don’t know why clipper removed this feature, it’s essential and without it there is no point in running coupon site.
If flatter can add few basic features it will be great…
1) automatically copy coupon code to clipboard when people click on show coupons.
2) when people click on show coupon code it opens a new tab with affiliate link, problem is people are going there first. Tab should open but people should remain on coupon site where they can copy coupons or share coupons first.
This is a great theme. Thanks!
Very nice and clean theme. One of the biggest advantages that Mohsin helps when problem appears.
With Flatter you can force to open affiliate links together with lightbox. So when Clipper developers still strugling to fix that Mohsin did he’s job. Thank you for this nice theme.
Using the flatter theme and it definitely looks like a major facelift to the boring standard clipper design. Moreover, there are some additional functionality added to make the theme well worth it. If you are looking at a better looking coupon site, flatter is definitely a good one to try.
I echo the comments in previous reviews. It would be great if the developer considered including different color schemes in v2 – that would be great. Impressive for a first release – all the functionality is working as expected. Good job.
Really nice clean theme – well coded – I too wished the colour scheme was a bit more flexible… it certainly is worth the money IMHO!
This is a very clean and well designed child theme and top all that its responsive!
The only draw back from me is that you cant change the colors to suit your need in backend.other than that top marks.

This a brilliant – by far, the best looking child themes on appthemes today. It’s great because it’s really a blank canvas for us to enhance. Please build a vantage and jobroller versions asap.
Secondly, can the nav menu be brought below the logo and search bar. It’s where users expect to see the nav and we’ve found anything that removes thought speeds up the purchasing decision. Is it also possible to have a second menu so that login and registering plus a link back to other appthemes is easier.
Thanks for your valuable suggestions. I can’t promise it will happen, but I will seriously look into having an additional navigation below the header (logo and searchbar).
That’s great to hear. It’s good to have options. BTW does it support a slider. I really like the look of Coupons By Kate
http://couponsbykate.com/
I think Flatter will become a big hit. It’d be brilliant if you also followed up with a Vantage and Job Roller one too – I’d buy in a heartbeat!
Anyway, expect a sale this week, my friend :))
Yes, Vantage please!! I have a project that needs a design like this! I’d love Clipper on one sub-domain and Vantage on another and this flat design is ideal! I’d buy today if both were available!
Great work!
seems very nice, do you plan to make something similar for jobroller?
Yes, it is in the plans as mentioned in the FAQ tab, the work has not started yet, but hopefully very soon!
I just tested your theme on the phone. The problem is that when I click show coupon, coupon is not copied to clipboard so I can paste it on the store I need.
It looks nice on the phone, but that’s it. We need the functionally
Hi there, thanks for taking a look. The click to copy functionality comes from a Flash script, does your mobile support Flash? This will remain a handicap on iOS devices which do not have Flash support, but manual copy and paste would still work in any case.
Hi,
is it posible to add a custom field to the stores taxonomy?
Thanks for the reply!
The child theme itself doesn’t extend the functionality of Clipper a lot, but there are plugins available that let you add custom fields to any taxonomy, but presumably you have to add the code to display their values on the front end manually.
To the people who placed a review, thanks a ton, and yes your echos have been heard, we are planning to add colour schemes to the theme very soon, and are also planning to add an additional navigation menu below the header.
Hi,
When do you have version 2 with multi-scheme color?
Hi Jacob,
I can’t give you an ETA at the moment, but it will be after our next product release which is a similar looking child theme for ClassiPress.
Regards,
Mohsin
Great looking child theme. I’m definitely interested in purchasing. Which responsive framework did you use in the design.
Hi Katie,
It is not using any responsive framework. The ‘responsiveness’ has been hand-coded using CSS media queries.

Mohsin
Hi,
Is it possible to strip stores from the url?
So that a shop would look like mywebsite.com/amazon/ instead of mywebsite.com/stores/amazon
I think you question is more of a general requirement of removing the taxonomy slug from the URL. I would like to think that there are plugins available for this, and a quick search brought this plugin to my notice, which I think is worth trying:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/remove-taxonomy-base-slug/
Hi, I’m looking to purchase the theme but notice there’s an error when you click to show coupon. It goes to ‘page not found’. Is that just a demo error or a theme bug? Thanks
How can I translate theme into russian? I am using codestyle localization, and can translate clipper, but not flatter, because there are no .mo and .po files. I can translate it from source code, but as I read, it isn’t correct.
Can you help to made it ready to localization? It is important.
Replied via PM
I purchased the flatter theme and am experiencing some bugs:
– The search button on the front page has both the flatter and clipper icon displayed on top of each other
– The top menu navigation bar for Flatter is not available – the clipper navigation bar takes precedence
– The slider does not display correctly
Hi there,
Did you try disabling core stylesheets from the Clipper settings?
How would I go about doing that? I tried removing all the CSS from the Clipper stylesheet and it made no difference to the appearance of the website once Flatter is enabled.
I have tried a fresh install of wordpress, and versions 3.5 up to 3.7
Disabling the core style sheet worked (found it under advanced section).
Now how to enable the slider?
Got the slider working too.
How do I disable the featured slider to claim the real estate back? I could not find the function in header.php
Hi there,
The option to hide slider is only now available with Clipper 1.5. Please make sure you are using the latest version of Clipper and Flatter 1.1.
P.S. Please post any further support requests in the forum.
Love the theme…
In the blog section, it would be nice if we can clean that up a little. What I mean by that, right now the full article is displayed when going to the blog rather than just a summary, even though I have summary selected in the setting. Can this be done easily?
thank you!
Tariq
I would have purchased this theme if it wasn’t for the unresponsiveness and lack of updates from the author. Too bad.
Hi there,
I appreciate your views. The comments section is made for general comments or pre-sales questions, but not support queries. All support queries are meant for and dealt with in the forum section.

how to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1
The upload function in wordpress is giving error that directory exists
Please login via FTP or file manager and remove the “flatter” directory within /wp-content/themes/ and then replace it with the folder extracted from the Zip archive.
Hi Moshin,
My search forms say “Search for coupon cod” – it’s missing the “e” at the end. Not sure if I’m the only one having that problem, but it looks weird – any idea how to resolve that?
Thanks!
Hi, can you please post your website address to info@themebound.com so I can take a look and suggest changes? Thanks.
can we add a running store banner section with small logos on the top before featured and listings
Hi there,
As with any feature that already does not exist, you will either need proficiency in relevant technologies (HTML/CSS/jQuery) or professional help. It is possible to add a store banner carousel absolutely as the child theme is not encrypted and the source code can be modified.
Regards.
I understand that but I meant if this could be provided as a feature by the theme.
I understand that but I meant if this could be provided as a feature in the theme. For example, if I dont want the running featured coupons on website but want a running small logo of stores at the top of my homepage http://couponmonkey.in
Interesting suggestion, not promising anything, but I will consider it for the next version.
Regards,
Mohsin
Hi,
Can you let me know when the next version of the theme will be released and what additional features will be included. Will you be able to change the colour of the theme in the next release? Also, I noticed if you click the ‘Search for coupon code’ field button without entering a search term you are taken to the blog but in the demo all the coupons are listed. Is there a setting for that? Also, would it be possible to add a drop down mega menu off the ‘Stores’ and ‘Categories’ links in the header. Is there a plugin that would do that? Thanks
Sure, something like three to four weeks, could be sooner hopefully. The changes that will be definitely there are:
1. As many as 11 colour schemes to choose from.
2. Additional navigation area below the header. This will be optional from the theme settings. There will also be choice as to how the menu will render on mobile devices (Responsive CSS or HTML Select Field).
The above changes already exist in our soon-to-be-available child theme for ClassiPress based on Flatter, and once I release an update for Flatter, we will move on to Vantage and then JobRoller to complete the set.
Any additional features depend on the feasibility, including your suggestion of a mega menu and @amit1982‘s suggestion of a small store logo slider.
Regards,
Mohsin
A suggestion:
Redeem deal / Show coupon in my opinion is not occupying prime space. Probably category and tags can be moved to the side.
Your right, the buttons should be below the description like on other coupon sites.
I’m submitting this message on this page because the enquiry I submitted two days ago via the support forum is still unanswered. Can you please let me know where the image PSD files are located in the template files. I neeed to have a copy at my end and would like to change the logo to my company name. Thanks, James
Hi James, your post in the forums has been answered.
Will you be adding a sliderin next version?also would be nice to give the option to open coupons in a popup box and then at the same time automatically open the merchant site in another tab/window
“open coupons in a popup box and then at the same time automatically open the merchant site in another tab/window”
This will be a great feature!
There are no plans for the slider to be added to the next version. But I will be looking to include the functionality to open coupon codes in a popup and open merchant site in another tab.
Okay thanks. When your adding the new functionality of popup box with code and information probably what you could do is that the main page is reloaded and go to the merchant site, therefore ensuring that cookies are stored on the user computer, but at the sametime a new tab is open with my coupon site (at the same page the person was) and the popup box, there should still be an open for user to click a button to visit site even though its already open. Understand?
Please pleass add the slider, or at least give person the option of having it and removing it when pleas
Hi Eston,
I am not sure I am following you. Not sure what a page reload can achieve, and which cookies are you referring to exactly.
As for the slider, there are dozens of slider plugins available for general content on the WordPress.org plugin repository, which can be activated automatically or with minimum code change.
Regards,
Mohsin
To bettêr explain its better i show you a site that has this feature anycodes.com or coupons.com
